last day cont

We are just at the Frankfurt Airport and hopefully the wireless is decent enough to let me post this!  Thankfully we aren't in Germany long because I can only take so much of Trevor reading German words with a German accent! 😉

After we did the fort yesterday we were ready for another snack!  Trev had spotted a gelato flavour he wanted so we went and got that (it was a hot, 2 gelato in one day sort of day!). I got a cherry slush (or granita as it was called)!  We headed down to the harbour again where we ate our treats and checked out boat tour options.

Rick Steves mentioned a particular company he liked that has a boat from 1878 but we couldn't find the booth selling tickets. We wandered around looking at other companies and were just about to give up and settle for something else when Trev noticed a big old pirate boat pulling into the harbour. We enquires and it was leaving for a one hour boat cruise in 10 minutes. There was even a 20% discount with the Rick Steves book!

The cruise was great. Very refreshing to be out on the water with a beautiful breeze when it was so hot. Boats are also always a good way to see the city from a different angle!

We then took a break in our room to get ourselves organized and packed for our early morning the next day.

We wanted to take the cable car up Mount Srd (pronounced surge) at sunset.    So just befor 6pm (18:00 European time) we walked over. The cable car zips you to the top in 2 minutes. There are great views over Dubrovnik and the ocean. It was a bit hazy when we were up there but apparently you can see 4 different countries from there!

We had a glass of wine back at our room and then headed out for dinner. We picked a recommended pizza place and each had one final delicious pizza before we left!

We had great plans that even though we had to get up ridiculously early to catch our flight that we would wander the streets until late at night, savouring our last night. We would listen to the live music and stroll the Stradun (the promenade). Well we did stroll for a little while and enjoyed listening to some live music. But after a few glasses of wine already we were fading fast!  We watched some break dancers (very impressive!) and then made our way back to our room.

Look carefully for the break dancer!

This morning our alarm Went off at 4:30am.  And of course when you know you have to get up at 4:30 and you don't want to sleep in and miss your flight, you don't sleep well!

We had arranged to be picked up by a driver at 5:30 at the edge of the old town.    It was actually very cool. At 5am we left our apartment and wandered through a still lit up, but completely deserted Dubrovnik. All of the hustle and bustle was gone and it was just silent and peaceful!

And that's it!  Our flight from Dubrovnik to Frankfurt was uneventful. Now we are wasting time during our 5 hour layover before we fly to Toronto.

We get into Sudbury just after 8pm which will be just after 2am on the time zone we are currently on. That means from the time our alarm went off for us to leave this morning to arrival time will be almost 22 hours. By the time we get home to bed it will be 24 hours I'm sure!

It's been an awesome trip. Can't wait to see my kiddos at the airport!

PS check out these lounge chairs we found at the airport here!

our last day - boo hoo!

Our internet in our room is barely working. The rest of this post might have to wait until I am at the airport tomorrow!

This morning we got up and wanted to take care of a few souvineers for the kids before we went out and about. We had scoped out a few shops yesterday but wanted to check out a few more before we picked what to get them. We wandered all the little streets, poking into shops checking eachnplace (99% tourist junk). Did I mention yesterday though that I bought myself a dress?  I wore it today so you'll see it in the pictures.

It's funny because we never buy souvineers (usually jus a Christmas ornament which we finally found a decent one today). But it's different when you have kids. They are always on your mind so we have bought them a few things (and a few things x 3 kids adds up to a lot of space in our bags!). We are going to check our bags on the way home since it's not the end of the world if they don't arrive right away, we have a long layover in Frankfurt and it's easier to not have to deal with them, and I think at this point they are over the size/weight limit for carry on!  We also got some gelato this morning. Trevor got baileys kind and I got piña colada.

We ate our gelato down by the boat pier.

We came back to the room and dropped our parcels and then went out to find some lunch. We ate at a simple pasta place. I got carbonara and Trev got a seafood pasta. Trev really liked his. I give mine 6/10.

I am driving Trev crazy making him pose with his food for this blog (also for taking 2 versions of many pics with my phone and the camera so I can blog)

After lunch we did some more wandering.

We ended up walking over to the fort high above the city for some great views

Game of Thrones fans may recognize this cove from the TV series

dubrovnik part 3

After walking the walls we took a break in our room and the headed out for dinner. Jon and Katenrecomme des a restaurant to us called Lady Pi Pi (also a RS recommended place). It is named for this lovely fountain out front!

When we got there there was a line. We ended up waiting probably 40 minutes for a table. But the place was quite cozy and the food was great t heir specialty is meat on an outdoor grill.

We got the BBQ platter that had 4 types of meat, home made fries (delicious), grilled veggies and 2 dipping sauces. It was quite delicious!

After dinner we wandered around the main pedestrian drag. There was some great live music in a couple of places and it was wuite nice for strolling. But we couldn't eat or drink another thing so we wandered back to our room. Tomorrow is our last day 😢. We will make the best of it!  Here are some nighttime Dubrovnik pics!

And this is the square our room is on.

The view from our window. Surprisingly I can't hear anything in the room!
