Last Day in Drumheller

Friday was the last day of the trip.  :( It was a great day though!  We started of the day at the Royal Tyrrell Museum which focuses on dinosaurus and more specifically fossils. Drumeller is an area where they find a lot of fossils and the museum is really fantastic.  It is really well done, the technology is great, flow through the museum is excellent and all of the information is really fantastic!

Drumheller

Today we left the mountains behind!  It's crazy driving out of Banff towards Calgary.  One moment you are surrounded by mountains,  and the next you are in farmers fields with no warning.  We found it really interesting!

First stop was to meet Trev's brother Andrew in Calgary.  Andrew recently took a nursing job at a Calgary hospital and they are trying to sell their house to move out to Calgary.  Andrew just got out there about a week ago so we met up with him at a breakfast place in Calgary.  Breakfast was sooo good!

Day in Banff

We had maybe a little bit of a quieter day today.  Although it was still quite busy, it was the first day in a while that we didn't drive a long distance and stayed in the same hotel room we woke up in so it seemed like a relaxing day!  No packing or unpacking luggage.  Yay!

We started the day at the Banff gondola.  It was nice but it's the third gondola we've been on in the last 2 weeks.  There are beautiful views but we are getting to the point where we can only take so many pictures of mountains!  Haha!  Honestly the kids are getting a bit tired of hike/mountain/hike/mountain.  I am excited to get to Drumheller for a change of scenery plus dinosaurs!!

Jasper to Banff

We are going to have to do a backwards post again because I'm exhausted and the pics came in backwards!

Day in Jasper

So disappointingly, no pictures today!  Our internet at our chalet is going VERY slow tonight and I just can't get them to upload.  It will have to wait for a dump in Canmore!

No grizzly bear sightings from our deck last night!  Darn!

We were booked on a 9:15am boat cruise on Maligne Lake for this morning but when the weather looked bad yesterday and I went to check on whether the boat was covered, I saw that they had changed the opening day to June 10th!  Oddly, they hadn't contacted us at all to let us know our boat trip was cancelled.  I was confused last night and ended up using social media to contact them because all of their numbers were closed at that point.  I heard back early this morning from them to say yes, it is not running because there is still ice on the lake.  Nice of them to let us know!  Sigh.

So change of plans for the day a bit.  It actually was ok.  We would have had to leave really early this morning to make it in time and honestly we needed a quiet morning.  We have literally not stopped since we got here.  We generally, get back to our room at 7pm, get all of our stuff ready for the next day, get kids to bed, write in journal/blog, crash.  So I was ok with a quiet morning.

The day turned out to be basically the same as the last few weather wise.  Calling for rain all day but really only rained maybe 10% of the time.  The rest of the time just a bit cloudy but the weather really didn't impact our day much (except for impacting the views a bit).

Lake Louise to Jasper

I woke up today feeling a but under the weather.  Nothing major and it didn't really impact the day at all.  I'm wondering if just go, go, go with not great sleeps each night is just catching up to me!

The kids spotted this cute little groundhog right outside the hostel.  While the hostel worked out ok, it definitely didn't feel like 'home' and we were happy to check out.

Revelstoke to Lake Louise

Well today was meant to be a day full of hiking and the forecast was for non-stop rain.  Owen woke me up at 2:30am to tell me that Anna was taking over the bed.  I got up and moved her back onto her side and then I never fell back asleep.  ;(  In the time I was awake a monitored satellite and weather from several different sites and had really given up on doing much today.  Thankfully it turned out to be a great day and the weather wasn't nearly as bad as I had thought!

As a side note, the bed situation is really turning out to be a pain.  Anna truly is extremely annoying to sleep with because I've slept with her many times.  She flails around like mad and takes over the bed and hits her brothers with her flailing limbs.  Not surprisingly, brothers have much less patience for this than parents do and every single day, whoever slept with Anna wakes up miserable, having got no sleep and they always wake up furious with Anna as if she has meant to be attacking the all night long.  Today it was Owen's turn and he woke up a complete beast. Thankfully he got his second wind halfway through the day and changed his attitude because I was pretty concerned there for a while!

First thing on the agenda was the Revelstoke Pipe Mountain Coaster.  I was 90% sure that we would not be able to do this since they close it in the rain and there was just no way it wasn't going to rain in Revelstoke this morning.  But we decided to drive there anyways, just in case there was a brief pause in the rain and they let us go.  Today was actually the first day they opened the coaster for the season and we were the second family in line!  When I asked the guy if it was going to run, he told me they upgraded the brakes in the off season and now they can run in the rain!  Awesome!

Whistler to Revelstoke

OK my pictures came in backwards for some reason tonight and because our hotel doesn't have wifi in the rooms I am using Trev's data and don't want to do it again so we will have to just do the day backwards!

Today we went from Whistler to Revelstoke.  It's about a 6.5 hour drive.  The forecast was not looking good but it wasn't raining when we got up so we decided to move our butts along quickly and try to get to a hike we wanted to do!  The hike was about 20 minutes in and 20 minutes out and it brought us to a site where a train had wrecked in the 50s.  They didn't know what to do with the rail cars so they had a logging vehicle just pull them into the bush and they left them there.  They have since been taken over by graffiti artists and have also become popular with mountain bikers with jumps made on and around them.  It was actually a very cool place!  Unfortunately while we were looking at the rail cars it started to rain quite hard and we were pretty wet by the time we got back to Big Chungus.  We had hoped to go to the waterfall we skipped yesterday but it was very wet so we decided to just get on the road.  We had a full day of driving ahead of us to get to Revelstoke and we didn't want to get in too late.

About an hour into the drive I looked back and Anna looked white as a ghost and she said she was going to throw up.  I threw her a bag and she proceeded to throw up.  Looks like she inherited my car sickness gene!  When you see the timelapses below you will see why she got car sick.  It was a pretty wild ride today with so many twists and turns and ups and downs!  Unfortunately it rained about 75% of the time.  But every once in a while we'd emerge into a sunny spot and be able to enjoy the mountain scenery for a bit until we hit a wall of rain again.

Whistler

Today we had to wake all the kids up just after 7am so we could make it to our ferry in time for our reservations.  The ferry was leaving from Nanaimo and we needed to leave at 8am to make it in time.

Victoria - Day 2

Today we all had a bit more sleep and a bit more patience which was great!

We woke up and had breakfast of english muffins and berries.

Victoria

I'll be honest and say that today wasn't the 'best' day.  We still had a good time but I was grumpy and the kids drove us crazy today.  A road trip with 3 kids isn't easy and we are all exhausted.  Nobody sleeps great at the hotels (especially me), we are dealing with a time change and since we got to our hotel at about 2am on our timezone on the first night we arrived, we are all still quite tired.  Add on that being together 24-7 and lots of boring parts of the day and it's easy to get on each other's nerves.  But we still had fun today!  Here is our adventure!

Day 2 in Vancouver

First a few things I forgot about yesterday!  We stopped at a sushi place in Chinatown for lunch and it was really good.  But if you can believe it, I got no pictures of the sushi!  😮

Also yesterday mid-day, when we went to go from Chinatown to the Gastown Steam Clock, we ended up walking through a very rough part of town.  It was very sad.  So many homeless people and so many dazed people walking around totally out of it.  It's probably one of the worst areas I've ever walked through.  Joel really didn't like it and at the end of the day he said he had a good day but he wants to leave Vancouver.  He doesn't like the city.  He said he really didn't like that part of town and also didn't like all of the noises of the city.  I don't think this kid will be moving to Toronto any time soon.  Today we were less in the city and more in the parks so Joel liked it a bit better.

Vancouver

After a 6 year hiatus from blogging, apparently I'm back to share pictures of ourtrip out west!
