I mentioned last night that we were going out at night to explore Rome because it looked like our last clear night. I’m glad we did it but it was exhausting!!!

Aperol spritz while taking the Landry off the line! |
We left at about 6:10pm. Unfortunately we hadn’t really seen how difficult it was to get to the start of where this walk through Rome was to take place. It was not near any subway stations so there was no easy way to get there. It would have been a 30 minute walk from the nearest subway station and then starting a 45 minute walk. Just too long. We metroed to the nearest subway station to figure it out. Eventually we determined we should take Rome’s version of an uber.
I wanted to grab a takeout piece of pizza and eat it while we walked but again, the kids were bound and determined to go to a restaurant and get pasta. Even though the meal was pretty fast, by the time we ate, our uber driver found us (took a bit) and we got to the start of the walk, it was 8pm. We were tired but it was a beautiful night! We walked through Campo de Fiori, an atmospheric square.

Floc chi with tomato sauce and mozzarella for Owen. I think his was the winner! |

So many random doors like this bathroom door have keys in them so you can lock them! |
 |
Waiting for our uber. These are public scooters. You put money in them to activate them and then you just leave them wherever when they run out of time. |

Camp de Fiori. The sky and moon made for awesome pictures! |
Gelato while we walked to Piazza Navona

Vendors were selling these flashlights in the square as well as light up Whitley things that flew into the sky |
Next few pics are from Piazza Navona

Four Rivers fountain by Bernini. Another Angels and Demons spot! |
Then we walked over to the Pantheon (another Angels and Demons sight.
This was on the way to the Trevo fountain

Throwing a coin in the Trevor fountain to ensure our return to Rome. It’s worked twice so far as this is our third trip to Rome! |

Anna was hanging in by a thread at about 9:15pm at this point! |

Spanish steps and the Metro stop. But we had to climb the steps to get there! With over 24,000 steps, it was a slog! |

An exhausted metro ride back! |
I’m glad we did it because it was an amazing walk and wouldn’t have been the same in the rain! But we ended up changing our next day plans when we got back we have been going and going and going non-stop since we got here and we are pooped after that late night (10pm once the kids hit their beds) plus 24,400 steps, setting the alarm for 7am to get to our early Coloseum reservation sounded like torture instead, thankfully it’s low time so I was able to make a new reservation for 10:45am which allowed us to set our alarms for 9am instead. We can’t get a refund for our original tickets but the kids were always free and we just decided to eat the cost penalty and take the two hours of extra sleep it’s 9am as I’m writing this and I’m really glad we’ve had a quiet morning. We needed it! Will write the rest of this post tonight!

Breakfast! We have a fantastic bakery called Cornettoland right outside our Airbnb. Fantastic prices and every single thing looks so good. These berry danishes (with some fruit and yogurt) were our breakfast this morning
|
We metroed over to the colosseum and it unfortunately started to rain as soon as we got there. And it didn’t let up a bit for the whole day.
The kids are missing the quiet pedestrian Venice life and probably aren’t enjoying the big city, packed metro, noisy, Rome life quite as much. Being well into the trip and being tired doesn’t help. And this rain today. Yeesh. It was still good but the kids (and us honestly), just weren’t into it quite as much as at the beginning of the trip. It also doesn’t help that tomorrow and our last day are supposed to be rainy also.
But we will made the best of it and did 18,500 steps today before we tapped out!

Me trying to bribe Owen’s patience with sour patch kids |

Owen loving the colosseum! š Honestly the kids didn’t hate it! It is interesting but there was a lot of jostling if umbrella wielding crowds. I just caught Owen with a somber expression |
TThe happiest everyone is is when we are eating. They have loved every leak. No complaints there!!
 |
Owen liked this glass Coke bottle |
Now onto the Roman Forum it has now gone from raining to sort of pouring and the ground is completely full of puddles so our feet were immediately soaked š¬
 |
Hard to even keep the camera lens dry. My Rick Steves app kept turning off because rain drops were hitting the buttons. Anna’s phone wouldn’t charge when we got back because it had water in the port. It was quite wet!! |
 |
Leaving the Forum, we walked the 20 minutes to the Pantheon. This is along the way |
 |
The gelato was the bribe that got us through the Pantheon!! We got gelato even though we were soaked and cold! š |
 |
Wrinkly skin from being wet all day! |

Passed the Trevor fountain this time in the day |

Trevi!! |

The kids just wanted to get back to our room so they went straight back. I took a detour to get myself some hot chocolate. This is the European hot chocolate that almost has the consistency of pudding! Came with a spoon! I ate a bit like that and then added some boiling water in the room to make it drinkable. |

If you are going to make faces in our family selfie, you will get featured in the blog!! š |
We took off all our wet clothes and got into our beds and begged for a little while. You can tell the kids were wiped because when I offered to go to a restaurant or bring back takeout (and the takeout option wasn’t their favourite) they chose the takeout. They’ve been wanting to do restaurants every day to now. But it was still pouring at supper time.
Trev and I went to this Kebab place where the owner didn’t seem to speak any English and only a bit of Italian. He couldn’t understand the lady working there who spite Italian with a bit of English. So it was telephone with us telling the lady and then her trying to explain to him what we wanted. It was so confusing. Trev and I were laughing because despite them having pictures and numbers of all the food, when we tried to order it he would be so confused it would be like we tried to order some random customer thing not even on the menu. In the end we got food that was mostly what we wanted, none of it was great. But it filled us up and we ate it back in our dry apartment! š

We did lights out for the kids at 8pm tonight. Tomorrow we are taking the train to Orvieto. It’s supposed to rain on and off all day. I’m hoping it’s not more than it is. I’m afraid we will go all this way to enjoy the ambience of a little Italian Village and if it’s pouring it won’t be very enjoyable. But hopefully everyone will be well rested and it will turn out to be a good day.
Here are some pics of all our stuff drying in every nook and cranny of our apartment! š
