Exploring the Rincon de La Vieja area

It was an interesting night!  This is a rural area so there were a lot of sounds during the night. Dogs, roosters, birds, and sounds I have never heard before!   I am never a great sleeper.  It wasn’t the best sleep ever, but despite the noise, I slept ok. I will wear earplugs tonight! Both Anna and I were up at 5:30 so we decided to go for a little walk around the property.

Early morning sounds from our Curubande porch!

Anna took this picture of a cute bird!

Bah. I just added more pics and they came in all in the wrong order again. Not sure how to stop that from happening. So you will get the storey if they rest if the day and then random pictures in a random order because it is Kate and I need to sleep! 😃

We did 3 main activities today. #1 was Pozos Los Coyotes. This is a nature area with tourquise waters, an amazing cave you could swim into, a Tarzan rope to swing into the water, cliff jumping and tubes you can rent to float down the river. We were there just after 8am and it was incredible. We had the cave area to ourselves for a while and it truly felt like paradise. My torn MCL felt very weird doing a kicking motion in the water but I managed!
Then we rented tubes for the kids to float down the river!
Honestly when we left here I thought: this could definitely be a highlight of the trip not truly felt magical.

We went back to the Airbnb to change and have a snack and then we were off to Hacienda Guachapelin for a zip lining tour. As soon as we got there we bumped into Aaron and Allison and Rowan. They had booked a full day adventure tour at the same place and had no idea what order they’d be doing their activities but it ended up we were all on the same zip lining your together!

Zip lining was fun and scary!  The zip lining itself was super fun. My favourite was when we got to the canyon. Some of the areas we had to climb to get to the different platforms were scary though. I will admit to feeling a little shaky at the end. It all felt very safe though. Fully tied off at all times. People double checking the harnesses etc.
Owen was the craziest, doing 2 runs upside down. There was also a Tarzan swing part where you stood on a platform and then they pushed you off and you swing to the other side! 😮

We had lunch at the zip lining place which was hostels our first true meal of the trip. At this point we were sooooo hot and sweaty. I was starting to feel sick. But lunch and splashing water in our faces and lots of water helped!  We have gone through 13L of water so far in just a day and a half!

Last activity of the day was the hot springs heated by the volcano. It was nice and relaxing and we bumped into Aaron and Allison and Rowan again. We got to rub volcanic mud on our bodies which apparently has a lot of good properties? 🤷🏼‍♀️

We got pizza to go from the resort and headed back to our Airbnb and ate it by the pool. We now are all showered and repacked up for tomorrow (checking out in the morning). I’m ready for bed (with earplugs tonight!)

Here are the pictures all in the wrong order. Pozos Los Coyotes (the cave and tubing place) to be shortened to Coyotes in the captions.

  3. Love all the photos and descriptions, Carly! Right now, Val and I are trying to figure out how close you are to the locations we visited in our 2016 Costa Rica trip. We enjoyed a hot springs river and also zip-lined (I'm guessing there's more than one of each across C.R.! ha ha ). We drove most of west coast and also went inland to the Arenal Volcano. Looking forward to comparing notes when you get back! We'll keep following!

  4. Just checked your itinerary. Your route is identical to about 60% of our 2016 one!! We're reliving the trip through your blog!
