Trip - Day 1

Trev and I are just hanging out in our hotel room watching the hockey game which neither of us care about one bit!  The boys are in bed.  I figured I'd write a little update!

How successful was the drive?  It went alright I guess.  Along with Owen's eye infection (that then spread to his skin around his eye and I ended up at the doctor with him on Thursday AGAIN a few hours before we left) he also developed a horrible cough about an hour before we left.  We stopped for supper and then were on our way.  Owen was exhausted after getting to bed at 9pm the night before and having a short nap that day.  I figured he'd be out and sleep the whole way.  But instead he screamed for about half an hour.  Then he sort of fell asleep but would wake up because of a cough and cry out about every 1-2 minutes and scream for 10 seconds and then go back to sleep.  For hours of the drive he did this restless sleeping thing.  Finally about an hour from Toronto he really fell asleep.  But he was exhausted by the time we got here at 10pm.

Joel fell asleep at 7:30.  I was amazed!  But it didn't last long.  Half an hour later he was awake again and didn't sleep at all for the rest of the way.  He was cheerful and good the whole ride though.  It was a fairly pleasant ride!  Joel throuroghly enjoyed himself looking at the moon, the airplanes, the trucks and cars and the lights in downtown Toronto at night.  By the time we got all our stuff to our room and unpacked what the boys needed for sleeping they got to bed around 10:30pm.

You'd think maybe they'd sleep in right?  Owen did.  He slept until almost 8am.  Joel on the other hand was awake at 6am!  Thankfully we have a suite so Joel and I were able to stay in the bedroom quietly and not disturb Trevor and Owen while they slept in a bit!

We started the say at Riverdale Farm.  It's crazy because it's a farm in the middle of downtown Toronto!  They've got the standard farm animals.  Chickens, goats, cows, horses, etc.  It was a beautiful day and we enjoyed wandering around.  We went for a walk through a park and found a really cool playground.  It had a huge sandbox with tons of sandtoys (including tonka trucks).  I can't believe they don't get stollen all the time!  We played there for a while then got a picnic lunch to eat on the grass and headed back to the hotel for nap time.  We all nad naps!  Trev and I kept an eye on Owen's eye throughout the morning and it wasn't looking too bad we thought.

After naptime, we headed out for High Park.  There they have this playground:

Unfortunately we never made it!  We took the subway to the park.  It was a bit less convenient than we originally thought though.  Even with the subway it was a fair amount of walking.  It was so hot and Owen was in the Ergo wrap and he was really uncomfortable and hot.  It was then we noticed that one of his eyes really wasn't looking that great and we started to keep a closer eye on it.  Joel thought the subway was pretty neat and we got to the park the playground was in.  The playground was at the far end of the park.  Too far to walk.  But the park had a trackless train that did a round every half hour that we planned to take.  So we found a stop and waited.  And waited.  And waited.  And no train came!  Finally we gave up compltely on the train coming and getting to thecool castle park.  Dissapointing.  We found a not-as-cool playground nearby and went there instead and ate some icecream.

This is when the real discussions started about Owen's eye.  We didn't really like how it was looking.  What do to?  Take him to the third doctor in 2 days?  We decided to go back to the hotel and I started calling walk in clinics.  They were all not taking any more patients for the day.  Our options were to go to emerge (overkill we thought), go to the clinic tomorrow morning (missing time at the zoo), not go to the clinic at all and just watch and see what happens (too stressful!) or start him on the antibiotics (the doctor I saw in Sudbury had given me a prescription for an oral antibiotics if his eye seemed to be getting worse while we were away...but she wanted us to see another doctor first before we started them).  I decided to get advice from my nurse friend Jen.  In the end we decided to fill the prescription and start him on the antibiotics without seeing a doctor.  So at 6:30pm I went off in search of a pharmacy.  Owen got his first dose tonight and hopefully we start to see some clearing up soon!  I feel much better about it knowing now that he's started on the antibiotics.  Both boys are exhausted and sleeping soundly (although Owen's still coughing quite a bit) in their beds.

Hopefully the eye thing looks better tomorrow so we can just enjoy our boys having a blast at the zoo and not be worried about health issues.  I suspect Owen will probably be doing a lot of sleeping in the stroller tomorrow!

Some pictures!
